The Mummy Speaks: A Poem

Written about a dead Egyptian.

I once was alive, I lived and I loved,
I danced and I sang and I laughed and I cried.
My laughter is gone, and my dancing’s done, too,
And all my thick tears have turned dusty and dried.

I remember this land when it was fresh and new,
When the Nile flooded yearly and horses were rare,
When the king was a hero, an equal to gods,
When the gold flowed as thick as a goddess’s hair.

The Eye of my spirit remains dark and closed;
I slumber within my great coffin of stone.
If I were to leave, struggle up through my wrappings,
Would I find myself among friends or alone?
