Fanfiction.net: Reviews for “The Real World”

December 9, 2006

Rating: 3 stars

Apparently, this fanfic is not original; the person who posted it stole it from another fanfic writer, and the story itself is very well-known in this fandom. Of course, the fandom is up in arms about this, and have been giving the plagiarist a thorough scolding via the story’s Reviews section. What gets me, though, is how virulent the comments are; people are calling the plagiarist a slut, a whore, telling her they hope she dies and burns in Hell and that they hope she one day has a baby taken from her, because doesn’t she know that this story is like the original author’s own baby? It’s internet flaming at its worst, and it’s made all the more disturbing because the plagiarist could very well be quite young and naive. Plagiarism is never a good thing, and the response should always be swift and firm, but there have to be some limits.

The Surrendered Wife

December 8, 2006

Rating: 3 stars

Fucking scariest thing I’ve read all day (even including that squirrel article). Even scarier: I took the Surrendered Wife Relationship Quiz and got a score of 72… which, according to the score guide, is one of the higher scores. Jesus. I need to start nagging my husband more.

The Scotsman: Squirrels to be given contraceptives

December 8, 2006

Rating: 3 stars

“There is certainly no point in trying to teach a workshop of squirrels how to use condoms. They can’t even remember where they left their nuts.” But the really funny thing is that this trap-and-inject population control that the Scots are advocating for grey squirrels is exactly what the English have been advocating for the Scots for the last few centuries.
