Shipwrecked on the Shores of Christmas: December 7, 2005

In which the great ships go down.

The 'Titanic' sinking The Titanic’s in the news! The article isn’t giving the full story, apparently; the buzz in Titanic circles is that there’s more to be revealed, but that we’ll all have to wait until February, when the History Channel reveals it in their new documentary. Cue the groans from those of us who don’t have cable television. Also, note the stink of sour grapes on Robert Ballard’s breath —one minute it’s “let’s turn the Titanic into an underwater museum!”, the next it’s “the ship sank, get over it.” And don’t even get me started about his views on salvage…

[ETA: Hee!]

Speaking of shipwrecks (speedy and otherwise), I just finished reading Sole Survivor, a slim little volume on the sinking of the Daniel J. Morell, as described by the sole survivor of the wreck. Talk about violent breakups —when this ship split in half, the stern swung towards the front end of the ship and nearly smashed right into it. Every time I read about shipwrecks on the Great Lakes, I’m amazed that I’ve lived so close to a major disaster area for years, and only now have begun to get interested in it. I’m going to have to make a trip down to Lake Superior sometime —just to research the local shipwrecks, though; ain’t no way I’m getting on a boat out there.
