24 Goes Downhill
January 20, 2007
Details:
FOX / 8:00 PM - 9:00 PM
Genre: Drama
After watching the season premiere of 24, I’m torn between watching a once-brilliant show drive itself into the ground and boycotting a once-brilliant show that’s become a racist parody of its former self. The great thing about 24 used to be its diversity—the villains weren’t always swarthy, steely-eyed Muslim fanatics (although they seemed to have dropped even the “fanatics” tag these past few seasons). There’s a fine line between creative license and close-minded prejudice, and this show has definitely gone way too far over that line. Plus, it’s committed the cardinal sin of predictability—the minute anyone who looks even vaguely Middle Eastern walks onscreen, you know you’re looking at a two-dimensional villain character who will try to thwart the superhuman hero for no other reason than because They Hate Freedom. I remember when this show was fun for liberals and conservatives; now, it’s extremely right-wing… almost fanatically so.
