To End All Wars (2001)

August 19, 2008

Rating: 2 stars

A fairly rote story about the atrocities of war, told from the point of view of a Scottish prisoner of war in a Japanese prison camp. It has the potential to be a gripping drama, but falls far short by subscribing to the same old melodramatic tricks and broad war-is-hell moralizing as every other mediocre war film ever made. (It has voice-over narration—need I say more?) The facts are generally straight, but whoever wrote the screenplay does not have a gift for educating the audience through dialogue without the lines coming off as amusingly stilted. Even Kiefer Sutherland seems bored by the whole thing—and he’s getting hit with shovels most of the time. Overall, it was hard to take seriously; jokes and rejoinders kept springing into my head, even when people were being tortured and executed. Not worth it even for war buffs; only recommended for sadistic Kiefer fangirls who want to see him tied down naked.
