Dark City: The Day After
July 31, 2008
Tony and I watched the Director’s Cut last night, and I watched the original again today to compare. The new version is… different. I hesitate to call it better, since I think the original theatrical release is brilliant; they’re two different movies, in a way, both incredible in their own different ways. The theatrical version moves much quicker, particularly towards the beginning, and challenges viewers to make the connections themselves without having to have every little thing spelled out for them; the director’s cut is more deliberate, taking its time setting up the situation and providing more clues to what’s going on in the City. And as much as I enjoyed the new version (and will undoubtedly be enjoying it over and over and over in the days to come), I have to say that I think the original theatrical release is the better version, at least for newbies. I’ll put up an in-depth dissection of the new release and its pros and cons soon.

Meaning this, of course—and meaning that I am developing all kinds of nervous tics trying to wait until my husband gets home so we can watch it together. There is a very good chance that I’ll have a stroke sometime in the five-and-a-half hours before he gets home…
I Want…
July 25, 2008
… to care about the new X-Files movie, but… the joy seems to be gone from me. It has just been too damn long since the show ended for me to even remember where the story arc ended, let alone how I felt about it. Also, I was not feeling the Mulder love for several seasons at the end there—I might be the only ’Phile in the world who liked it Doggett-style (at least until that damn bitch Reyes showed up). I will be seeing this eventually, though, because this is the former-fangirl equivalent of running into an ex-boyfriend on the street: it’s weird, it’s awkward, it’s probably not going to be pleasant, but you have to take the time to catch up a bit just out of respect for your former passion. Besides, I love the Gillian Anderson coverage that has come out of this; the more G.A., the better, that's what I always say.
In other, better movie news: MY DARK CITY DIRECTOR’S CUT DVD HAS OFFICIALLY SHIPPED. And soon I will be holding it in my grubby little hands. WIN.

HA! Victory is ours! … but I’ll still continue to transfer my movie ratings over to this site, because you never know what else Netflix might do.
