The Night Porter

I half-expected The Night Porter to be a really sleazy, badly-done pseudo-porn flick, but I was wrong—it’s well-done, sensitive, and not so much deliberately shocking as unapologetically blunt. The plot—a Holocaust survivor resuming an affair with the Nazi officer who abused her—seems to strike some people as highly offensive, and while I certainly hope that it’s not based on a true story (yeep!), I don’t think it’s wrong to examine the sexual and psychological innuendoes of such a relationship—after all, there is such a thing as Stockholm Syndrome. Also: Dirk Bogarde looks like Humphrey Bogart with a facelift. And I mean that in a good way.

In the neverending family quest to find the Worst Movie of All Time, my mother swears she’s found something that even trumps Lady in the Water—it’s called Plan 9 from Outer Space, and it’s apparently a truly terrible 1950s B-movie. Dare I watch it?…
