The old saying was never more true: You can’t judge a book by its cover. And, despite the off-putting exterior, this book turned out to be one hell of a read. | Read Full Review

On the day of Eva McEwan’s birth, six blackbirds congregate in the tree outside her window—a bad omen, according to superstition. Soon her mother is dead, and she is left to be raised by her grieving father and aunt. But Eva is not a normal child, and is haunted by two ghosts, one an adult woman and one a young girl. “The companions”, as she calls them, accompany her into adulthood, wielding their influence over her life in ways that are not always welcome. | Read Full Review
Extreme Encounters by Greg Emmanuel

I came across this book in a second-hand bookshop and bought it for $1—and I have to say, that was one of the best dollars I’ve ever spent in that shop. For a mere buck, I get to experience being eaten by pirahnas, mauled by a bear, trapped in a falling elevator, dying from the ebola virus, and so much more. The experiences are neatly categorized (animal attacks, household accidents, etc.), are written in the second person so as to bring the experience closer to home, and are laced with the kind of black humor I live—er, die for.
