The Serpent in the Crown: Charla = Carla?

June 8, 2007

Seven pages into this, and already I have a question: when did Amelia’s granddaughter Charla become Carla? I know it’s the same character (David John’s twin sister), but this new spelling is a significant deviation from the previous entries in the series. I Googled it, and found this answer in an author interview, but the answer does not really satisfy; failing to note a significant change in a character’s name, no matter how young the character or how obvious the reason might seem to the person writing the story, is simply lazy writing and lax editing.

The Terror: Dan Simmons

The Terror really is terrifying; I think I’m going to have nightmares for the next few days. Not so scary was The Franklin Conspiracy (Jeffrey Blair Latta), which was surprisingly well-written but seemed half-baked, in both the “unfinished” and the “unbelievable” sense.
